My first C4K in November was Mrs. Yollis' Class Blog. Her class blog is something I really want to do with my classroom when I become a teacher. her blog was so organized and had information for the students and parents.

Then I had to watch a podcast by a third grade classroom. I was having technical difficulties and was not able to watch the podcast.

My last C4K, I was assigned to comment on Jorja's blog. Jorja wrote about a class field trip they went on to Stardome. Jorja described Stardome as really hilly and a lot of walking, but overall she had a good time.
This blog is kept up by Mr. karl Fisch. I really like reading his blogs because he is so down to earth. He really makes you think and is honest about what he feels. To Be Honest is about teachers today are trying to shelter their students from all the negativity in life. The teachers are letting the kids believe that in the real world nothing goes wrong. However, we know that is not true. Why hide the students from the computers just because the internet has "bad stuff". The teachers should educate their kids on how to use the internet correctly.

I also read Mr. Karl's #occupytheclassroom. This post was about change in the classroom starts in the classroom. If the teacher does not change how political the school systems are, then change will never be made.
I have never heard of teachers using using music while they teach, but after thinking about it, kids love music. Incorporating iTunes into a lesson will really get the students' attention. Before taking EDM310, I would have never thought to use a blog for my students, but now, I will. Having a class blog is an easy way to keep in touch with the students outside of the classroom.

In his blog, Box of Tricks, he has a forever long list of helpful internet sites to help teachers in anyway imaginable. This list is organized from A to Z and has anything you could ever image on it. The websites he has listed can be used for the students also. He has a link to help create a graph and a link that helps create comic drawings. This blog is very different from other I have read, but just as helpful.
When we had to post on our progress from our PLN, I was still getting use to the Symbaloo website. But now I have it all figured out. With my Symbaloo, I set up my email, Facebook, Twitter, and news reports so all I have to do is just click the icon and it pops up. I feel like I am going to get a lot of use out of Symbaloo and I like it a lot. I really like how everything I need is just a click away. All the websites I use are there on one page and organized for me.
After I read the post about pencils, I knew that he was not really talking about kids bringing pencils home. It did not run through my head that he was using a metaphor instead of just being sarcastic.

2. Mr. Winkle Wakes

3. Having kids write down metaphors they read through out day is oone way of teaching them about the use of metaphors. Also, having them read something and they have to pick out all the metaphors they jut read. Practice is always the key!

4. Using metaphors is just a different way of talking. When people use metaphors, it make stories more interesting or more detailed.

Metaphor discussion update

WOW, I had no idea that Dr. Strange was connected with so many people by internet. You are making a difference in the world of education.

Why We Use Metaphors

Using metaphors allows the reader and writer to open their minds and think outside the box. Metaphors add creativity to stories that would probably be boring without them.Kacie Manuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16102200931705018041noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5145339976462709931.post-5834420453899190552011-11-20T10:50:00.002-06:002011-11-20T10:50:48.592-06:00Project 15bKacie Manuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16102200931705018041noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5145339976462709931.post-33441086565150754642011-11-20T10:45:00.000-06:002011-11-20T10:45:20.959-06:00Blog Post 13Online Education

In the article, My Teacher is an App, they talk about virtual schools. The pros and cons of kids taking online classes for high school. Stephanie Banchero and Stephanie Simon, the authors of the article, bring up really good points that I have not thought of about online schools. Having kids taking high school classes online will save the state money, but money is not everything. The education for the students is much more important. The state and school system should have the kids in mind first and do what is best for them.

I like the idea of online schools. I think it is great for students who are fast learners or slow learners. Each student can complete each assignment at their own pace. The students can make school fit into their schedule. Having classes online will save the school system money. Some states are running out of their budget money for schools, so turning to an online school will save money. According to the article, a teacher will be able to over look 250 students at one time, rather than a traditional teacher in a classroom only being able to teach 150.

After reading the article, I also disagree with the online schools. Having kids actually go to school will help them with their social skills. They will be in an environment with countless of other kids. This way they will be able to interact with other kids their own age. In an traditional school, the kids have sports, clubs, and handfuls of activites to participate in. Our country already has a high obese rate, and having kids take classes online will increase that rate. Cyber-school will not push physical activity, which children need. Another con of school online, is the test scores. It is proven that the students who attend online schools test much lower than students who actually go to a school.
We have been meeting and discussing how we are going to approach this final project but do not have a definite plan. We think we are going to incorporate the SMARTboard in the project though. This blog has just about anything you can imagine on it. If a students is having trouble in a certain subject; she has a link with different learning games. She has a link to just about anything and everything. This blog is very easy to navigate, even for her third graders and their parents. This is an easy way to keep parents updated with their kids and what they are learning in school. I plan to have a class blog like this one when I become a teacher.Kacie Manuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16102200931705018041noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5145339976462709931.post-72756672766032790292011-11-13T17:52:00.000-06:002011-11-13T17:52:18.374-06:00Blog Post 12My blog post assignment is having to write a post on what your dislikes and likes are in this class. Write what you will take with you once you leave this class. Giving feedback to Dr. Strange for future reference.

My favorite part of this class has to be the C4K. I like reading the kids blog post, especially the ones who do not live in the U.S. Reading all these kids blogs makes me realize how important class blogs are to students. Having the kids keep up with a blog teaches them how to use technology and it helps with their writing skills. My least favorite thing about this class is all the projects we have due every week. Yes, I am learning more than I imaged, but it seems overwhelming at times. I know being a teacher is not going to be smooth sailing and stress free so this is just getting me use to the real life.

WOW!! This video is amazing. I love how these little kids are using blogs and everything else to learn by themselves. They sound so excited and ready to learn new information. Some of the kids even go home and work on school work by themselves because they are having fun with their learning.

I am excited to become a teacher especially after watching this video. All kids can be taught and this video proves that.

Skype

Mrs. Cassidy sounds like the nicest teacher ever. While I was watching this video, I can tell she loves what she does. Mrs. Cassidy used her 5 new computers wisely and did not just putting them in the closet because she did not have enough for everyone. She uses all parts of the internet for learning and not shelter her students. She is teaching her students how to use the internet correctly and not give out personal information.

I was assigned to read Mr. McClung's class blog which was a video of CNN student news. This video was really neat. I did not even know that CNN did news for students. I really liked his blog as a whole. All the different information found on the blog. His class blog looks really kid friendly.

Lorenzo's Animation

Lorenzo had made an animated video of birds flying over jumping kangaroos. This video was really well put together and I could tell he worked really hard on it.Kacie Manuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16102200931705018041noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5145339976462709931.post-48853156871483595502011-10-30T21:31:00.000-05:002011-10-30T21:31:47.753-05:00Blog Post 10Do You Teach or Do You Educate

In this video, it helps me understand the difference between teaching and educating. Educating is what teachers should be doing. They should be educating their students and not just having them memorize information. That is something I have always thought and after watching this video, it really helped me understand why.

Don't Let Your Kids Take The Pencils Home

In this post about taking pencils home, he is using sarcasm about pencils. The kady is saying that students who take home pencils will do poorly on test because they will them for fun.

I like this post because the underlining meaning is about kids using their resources for their own way of learning. Students learn some many things in so many different ways. Who are we to stop them.

Mr. McClung writes a blog post after every year he has taught. I chose to read the post after his first year of teaching 2008-2009. During his first year of teaching, he learned that teaching was not all about him. The lesson plans he made up were not needed to be designed for him, they needed to be formed around the children. Mr. McClung was teaching for kids to learn. He also learned that as a teacher, he would have to be flexible and come to understand that his lesson are not going to be taught the exact way he planned. His last point he made was to never stop learning. As long as you are teaching students, you are going to learn just as much as them.

The second post I read was his second year of teaching, 2009-2010. One of the main points he made that i really liked was how he had to adapt to his new class and students. he also had to adapt to his new science curriculum and teaching new subjects. I also like how he talks about finding a school mom. I have never haeard of that when talking to first year teachers, but it is the best idea. I like the idea of befriending someone who has been at the school for years and knows how everything works.Kacie Manuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16102200931705018041noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5145339976462709931.post-20523050991775173312011-10-23T09:47:00.000-05:002011-10-23T09:47:15.058-05:00Project 13Kacie Manuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16102200931705018041noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5145339976462709931.post-73736606913341024722011-10-17T10:17:00.002-05:002011-10-17T10:17:27.377-05:00Project 12Kacie Manuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16102200931705018041noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5145339976462709931.post-4020349140829239302011-10-16T19:35:00.002-05:002011-10-16T19:35:36.903-05:00Project 11Kacie Manuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16102200931705018041noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5145339976462709931.post-31069202902564877632011-10-16T19:30:00.001-05:002011-10-16T19:34:40.791-05:00Blog Post 8This Is How We Dream

"Ideas don't belong to us individually, they belong to us as a culture." I like this quote from Dr. Richard E. Miller because ideas that people have, are thought up by all different people. Different people of certain cultures put their input in which evolves to an idea.

Teaching with multimedia is very interesting. The whole time I was watching the video I was completely drawn to what Dr. Richard E. Miller was saying. I think teaching with multimedia is very useful to students because they are not just listening to a teacher lecture, it is like they are part of the lecture.

Carly Pugh's Blog Post #12

I like the idea of future educators creating a playlist of videos that inspire them. Different lectures by different people touch people in different ways. My favorite video that she post about has to be Think Different. I like the thought behind Carly adding this to her playlist. I agree with someone needing to step out on a limb and make kids think. I believe that teachers take the first step in putting creatively into young peoples minds. Teachers are the ones who needs to have kids think outside the box.

After reading Carly's blog, I decided to look for some inspirational videos. I came across a link on YouTube that describes the keys to success. After watching the video, it really got me thinking about how I am going to become successful being a teacher. The answer. Attitude.
I liked both videos that I watched. I am still thinking of ways to make my final project video and I will probably come up with three or four ideas before I decided on that one idea that sticks with me. Right now I like the idea of using animation. The video idea is still kind of cloudy in my head but after watching the two videos, I can see a little light coming in.

Learn to Change, Change to Learn
The classroom needs to be more interesting. I agree with this and I am on board with making my classroom a fun learning environment. Kids grow up with technology so why not use technology in the classroom. Teachers need to try to figure out how to make learning fun. Learning does not need to be a bore, it can be interesting. I also agree with the kids not memorizing the information, but learning how to find the answer online. If they have the resources within reach, why not have the kids use them?

This was a great video. I agreed with the teachers making school fun and making education higher on the list. After watching this video, I can not wait to become and educator and to teach my kids useful information and not useless information.
I decided to use Symbaloo for my PLN. With Symbaloo, I can organize all of my favorite websites on the same page. When I created my Symbaloo, I got to pick between news, shopping, social, banks, and traveling websites. You are able to have up to 52 different boxes. I currently have Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, iTunes, and Google selected.
Randy Pausch delivered a message titled Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams. He was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and was asked to deliver a message with a meaning. Mr. Pausch explains in the beginning of the lecture that he may look fine on the outside, but he has ten tumors on his liver and has about three months to live. He decided on the theme Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams because he realized how much he has accomplished thanks to his dreams.

Mr. Pausch had big dreams as a kid growing up. Some of these dreams included being in zero gravity, playing in the NFL, having an article in the World Book Encyclopedia, growing up to be Captain Kirk, winning stuffed animals, and becoming an imagineer for Disney. With all of these dreams, Mr. Pausch has accomplished most of them. While trying to live up to these dreams he came across some brick walls, however he goes on to describe that brick walls are not for keeping you out. Brick walls are for seeing how badly you want something.

Mr. Pausch was able to be in zero gravity. Even thought he did not play in the NFl, he did play football when he was younger. He says that when he did play football, that got him to where he is today. A football field is where he is most comfortable. Captain Kirk, from Star Trek, taught Mr. Pausch about leadership. No, Mr. Pausch did not get to be Captain Kirk, but he did get to meet him. He did, though, end up winning the big stuffed animals from amusement parks. When he was younger his family took him on a trip to see Disneyland. As he was there, he decided he wanted to create rides like that. After he graduated college, he mailed off some applications to Disney and got rejected. Later in time, he ended up being able to work on an Aladdin ride for Disneyland. He was using a virtual tour for this ride. While trying to accomplish this, he came across many brick walls but never gave up.

In this lecture, he makes people realize that we are capable of more than we think of. He has accomplished all of his dreams even though it was not easy. People run into brick walls everyday, but only some people break them.Kacie Manuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16102200931705018041noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5145339976462709931.post-51426594473750753562011-10-02T18:18:00.000-05:002011-10-02T18:18:12.722-05:00C4KSimi

This week I had to comment on Simi's blog who had to create an avatar. Her avatar was dressed in sporty, athletic clothes. Simi said that she was not into that style and prefers to wear high fashion clothes. Simi attends school NZ.

Paulitia

Last week I commented on Paulitia's blog who posted about the Rugby World Cup. She made a slideshow about adjectives describing the Rugby World Cup. Her slideshow was very impressive and she is really into rugby. She attends Pt. England School in NZ.

Kamire

I commented on Kamire's bog also who goes to school at Pt. England School in NZ. Kamire talked about playing activities outside. They had stations set up outside and all the kids would get so many minutes to play at each station before rotating. After they finished all the stations they went back inside and had to write about all the different activities they played outside.
Alexis

Alexis is a student in Mrs. Dahl's class. She read Horrible Harry and really liked the book. It is about a teacher who finds something on her desk and Alexis predicts that someone is going to cheer the teacher up.
The Networked Student is about a student finding all the information he needs for school online. There are no textbooks or notes to take. The student is able to listen to podcast from iTunesU from professors all over the world. With this, the student is able to learn at their own pace.

I feel like teachers will still be needed. Not all students are going to know how to navigate around the internet to find what they need. Students will still be used as guides and educators. The students still ask questions when they need help and the teachers will help.

This way of learning is interesting and schools will be using it. With this way of teaching makes the student be more independent and teaches them time management.
PLE

After watching this video of a seventh grader's PLE, I understand more about a PLE. The seventh grader is very organized and efficient with her PLE. She uses it to her best ability and it is made for her.

My PLN is still in progress and hope to be very organized and well put together like hers. After watching the video I grasp the idea a little more and I am now ready to get started on my.Kacie Manuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16102200931705018041noreply@blogger.com1
