Student on Computer

It's Not About the Technology

According to Ms. Hines, teaching is not about the technology. Teaching is about making sure your students learn the information and not just memorize it. Technology is used to help teachers achieve this goal. She proceeds to go through four things that are important for being a teacher, teachers must be learners, learning and teaching are not the same thing, technology is useless without good teaching, being a 21st teacher without the technology. Her statement about teachers being learning is true being that our world is constantly changing. There is always something that can be learned. Just because a teacher has "taught" the lesson does not mean the students have learned it. Students learn differently so teachers may have to teach the same material different ways so all students can grasp the lesson. Yes it is a good thing to have computers and smartboards in classrooms only if the teachers are using them to the students use.

When I was in school, I did not have computers in my classes to use. Taking this EDM class and using a computer for everything has really opened my eyes to how much more I can learn. Having technology incorporated in classes reaches out to students and makes learning fun.

Is It Okay to Be A Technologically Illiterate Teacher?

This blog post by Karl Fisch is about the underlining question of rather or not teachers should be technologically literate. I have always said yes, people in general should be able to everyday technology. After reading this post, I think so even more. Karl made a good point about being able to use computers and any other devices was not important a year ago. But now, this is what our world has revolved around. When students get into the real world and try to find jobs, they will need to know how to use computers.

Teachers are learners too. All teachers need to learn how to use the technology that is available to them. Having computers in classrooms will have the children learn hands on. You hear about this teachers using blogger and twitter which is so useful to learning.

Social Media

Watching these numbers increase so drastically within one second is astonishing. This numbers with people using Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, iPhones is crazy. I never realized how many people are using the internet and what it all has to offer. Some of the things shown on the media I have never even heard of.

This is a good example of why people and teachers should technologically literate. This just comes to show you how many people are using the internet and everything on it.

A Vision of Students Today

This video really captures what it is like to be a student in college. We go to class to listen to the lecture for the day and take notes. But it is harder to learn the material if you are just listening to the teacher tell you what you need to learn rather than them finding interesting ways to teach us with videos, podcast, pictures, etc.

After watching this video I thought about teachers being technologically illiterate and this just shows you how everybody needs to be able to use the technology around them. Most of my teachers make powerpoints for the class notes but they are just filled with words. Listening to the teacher just ramble about the material is not the same as having the teacher "teach" us by showing us.

  1. Hi Kacie!
I really enjoyed reading your post! I have just a couple of suggestions for you. In the "It's Not About The Technology" section of your post the sentence "Her statement about teachers being learning is true being that our world is constantly changing." I think you just miss typed a little. I saw a couple of other little mistakes like this one throughout the rest of your post. I would just make sure to re-read your posts before submitting them. Grammatical errors are small fixes and I know because I have them all the time! We all do! I totally agree with your statement "Just because a teacher has "taught" the lesson does not mean the students have learned it." We have to make sure that our students are "soaking up" everything we are trying to teach. Like you said, even if that means that we have to go about teaching it in a different way! Also, I thought that the "Social Media Count" was astonishing too. It's crazy to think exactly how much we use technology! We are using it even more now that we are in this class! :)

  2. Hey Kacie,

You have a really good precise summary of Kelly Hines. You are right. Technology is worthless if teachers can't use it well. I hope that all of your classmates will learn what you have learned from this video.

Make sure you are proof reading your post. I saw several errors in your post.

    Keep blogging!
