Do You Teach or Do You Educate

In this video, it helps me understand the difference between teaching and educating. Educating is what teachers should be doing. They should be educating their students and not just having them memorize information. That is something I have always thought and after watching this video, it really helped me understand why.

Don't Let Your Kids Take The Pencils Home

In this post about taking pencils home, he is using sarcasm about pencils. The kady is saying that students who take home pencils will do poorly on test because they will them for fun.

I like this post because the underlining meaning is about kids using their resources for their own way of learning. Students learn some many things in so many different ways. Who are we to stop them.

Teacher's Apple

Mr. McClung writes a blog post after every year he has taught. I chose to read the post after his first year of teaching 2008-2009. During his first year of teaching, he learned that teaching was not all about him. The lesson plans he made up were not needed to be designed for him, they needed to be formed around the children. Mr. McClung was teaching for kids to learn. He also learned that as a teacher, he would have to be flexible and come to understand that his lesson are not going to be taught the exact way he planned. His last point he made was to never stop learning. As long as you are teaching students, you are going to learn just as much as them.

The second post I read was his second year of teaching, 2009-2010.  One of the main points he made that i really liked was how he had to adapt to his new class and students. he also had to adapt to his new science curriculum and teaching new subjects.  I also like how he talks about finding a school mom. I have never haeard of that when talking to first year teachers, but it is the best idea. I like the idea of befriending someone who has been at the school for years and knows how everything works.

This Is How We Dream

"Ideas don't belong to us individually, they belong to us as a culture." I like this quote from Dr. Richard E. Miller because ideas that people have, are thought up by all different people. Different people of certain cultures put their input in which evolves to an idea.

Teaching with multimedia is very interesting. The whole time I was watching the video I was completely drawn to what Dr. Richard E. Miller was saying. I think teaching with multimedia is very useful to students because they are not just listening to a teacher lecture, it is like they are part of the lecture.

Carly Pugh's Blog Post #12

I like the idea of future educators creating a playlist of videos that inspire them. Different lectures by different people touch people in different ways. My favorite video that she post about has to be Think Different. I like the thought behind Carly adding this to her playlist. I agree with someone needing to step out on a limb and make kids think. I believe that teachers take the first step in putting creatively into young peoples minds. Teachers are the ones who needs to have kids think outside the box.

After reading Carly's blog, I decided to look for some inspirational videos. I came across a link on YouTube that describes the keys to success. After watching the video, it really got me thinking about how I am going to become successful being a teacher. The answer. Attitude.

EDM for Dummies

I liked both videos that I watched. I am still thinking of ways to make my final project video and I will probably come up with three or four ideas before I decided on that one idea that sticks with me. Right now I like the idea of using animation. The video idea is still kind of cloudy in my head but after watching the two videos, I can see a little light coming in.

Learn to Change, Change to Learn
The classroom needs to be more interesting. I agree with this and I am on board with making my classroom a fun learning environment. Kids grow up with technology so why not use technology in the classroom. Teachers need to try to figure out how to make learning fun. Learning does not need to be a bore, it can be interesting. I also agree with the kids not memorizing the information, but learning how to find the answer online. If they have the resources within reach, why not have the kids use them?

This was a great video. I agreed with the teachers making school fun and making education higher on the list. After watching this video, I can not wait to become and educator and to teach my kids useful information and not useless information.

My PLN

I decided to use Symbaloo for my PLN. With Symbaloo, I can organize all of my favorite websites on the same page. When I created my Symbaloo, I got to pick between news, shopping, social, banks, and traveling websites. You are able to have up to 52 different boxes. I currently have Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, iTunes, and Google selected.

Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams

Randy Pausch

Randy Pausch delivered a message titled Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams. He was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and was asked to deliver a message with a meaning. Mr. Pausch explains in the beginning of the lecture that he may look fine on the outside, but he has ten tumors on his liver and has about three months to live. He decided on the theme Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams because he realized how much he has accomplished thanks to his dreams.

Mr. Pausch had big dreams as a kid growing up. Some of these dreams included being in zero gravity, playing in the NFL, having an article in the World Book Encyclopedia, growing up to be Captain Kirk, winning stuffed animals, and becoming an imagineer for Disney. With all of these dreams, Mr. Pausch has accomplished most of them. While trying to live up to these dreams he came across some brick walls, however he goes on to describe that brick walls are not for keeping you out. Brick walls are for seeing how badly you want something.

Mr. Pausch was able to be in zero gravity. Even thought he did not play in the NFl, he did play football when he was younger. He says that when he did play football, that got him to where he is today. A football field is where he is most comfortable. Captain Kirk, from Star Trek, taught Mr. Pausch about leadership. No, Mr. Pausch did not get to be Captain Kirk, but he did get to meet him. He did, though, end up winning the big stuffed animals from amusement parks. When he was younger his family took him on a trip to see Disneyland. As he was there, he decided he wanted to create rides like that. After he graduated college, he mailed off some applications to Disney and got rejected. Later in time, he ended up being able to work on an Aladdin ride for Disneyland. He was using a virtual tour for this ride. While trying to accomplish this, he came across many brick walls but never gave up.

In this lecture, he makes people realize that we are capable of more than we think of. He has accomplished all of his dreams even though it was not easy. People run into brick walls everyday, but only some people break them.

Simi

This week I had to comment on Simi's blog who had to create an avatar. Her avatar was dressed in sporty, athletic clothes. Simi said that she was not into that style and prefers to wear high fashion clothes. Simi attends school NZ.

Paulitia

Last week I commented on Paulitia's blog who posted about the Rugby World Cup. She made a slideshow about adjectives describing the Rugby World Cup. Her slideshow was very impressive and she is really into rugby. She attends Pt. England School in NZ.

Kamire

I commented on Kamire's bog also who goes to school at Pt. England School in NZ. Kamire talked about playing activities outside. They had stations set up outside and all the kids would get so many minutes to play at each station before rotating. After they finished all the stations they went back inside and had to write about all the different activities they played outside.

Alexis

Alexis is a student in Mrs. Dahl's class. She read Horrible Harry and really liked the book. It is about a teacher who finds something on her desk and Alexis predicts that someone is going to cheer the teacher up.

The Network Student

Google

The Networked Student is about a student finding all the information he needs for school online. There are no textbooks or notes to take. The student is able to listen to podcast from iTunesU from professors all over the world. With this, the student is able to learn at their own pace.

I feel like teachers will still be needed. Not all students are going to know how to navigate around the internet to find what they need. Students will still be used as guides and educators. The students still ask questions when they need help and the teachers will help.

This way of learning is interesting and schools will be using it. With this way of teaching makes the student be more independent and teaches them time management.

PLE

After watching this video of a seventh grader's PLE, I understand more about a PLE.  The seventh grader is very organized and efficient with her PLE. She uses it to her best ability and it is made for her.

My PLN is still in progress and hope to be very organized and well put together like hers. After watching the video I grasp the idea a little more and I am now ready to get started on my.
